The course is about YOU. Through writing about yourself, your plans, your interests, your ideas, your hopes and dreams -- you'll develop the strategies for reading, critical thinking, research and writing that are necessary for academic and professional success.
What you’ll be doing:
- A “Fiver” at the beginning of each class
- In-class and out-of-class writing exercises on many subjects
- Focusing on your self-concept and ability to learn more deeply
- and to get rid of what holds you back, and maximize the help you can give yourself
- Interacting with classmates and discussing reading and writing with them
- Writing three or four typed, graded essays
- Studying the textbook and doing exercises in it
- Doing several hours in the Learning Center
You need:
Access to a computer with Internet and email and a printer, preferably not just at school
50 4x6 index cards
Notebook paper for in-class writing and for taking class notes
A pocket portfolio marked Self-Knowledge with your name on the cover
Required textbook: Pocket Keys for Writers, 6th edition
One copy shall be on reserve at the library's main desk
Recommended: An up-to-date college dictionary (American Heritage, Random House, Webster’s New Collegiate), and a thesaurus.
Fivers: Each class begins exactly at the start time with a “Fiver,” a five-minute exercise on a 4x6 card. Any Fiver that’s missed due to lateness or answered wrongly deducts 2½ points from the final grade. Example: missing 5 Fivers reduces your grade by 12½ points, which is more than one grade level. Note: two Fivers can be missed or answered wrongly without penalty.
NOTE: Being absent without medical documentation lowers your grade. Missing a scheduled essay workshop class lowers your grade by 10 points.

Personal note:
I’m here to help you improve your reading and writing as much as I can.
I’m a professional writer who teaches part time, and in teaching I specialize in student success.
I’ll be teaching you more from the viewpoint of a pro writer than as an English teacher.
I do marketing and PR for nonprofits, authors and more.
My wife Leilani Darling and I have written several books and many articles.
We read like mad and have a library of over 3000 books.
We subscribe to about ten magazines and the Los Angeles Times.
We are both students of history, philosophy, religion, psychology and politics.
She is a marketing consultant, a lawyer, a real estate broker & a life coach.
We are now running a consulting business as well as creating nonprofit organizations for education and humanitarian projects.
NOTE WELL: If you ever find yourself in need of more input from me as the instructor -- if you haven't gotten back an assignment you need, or you just have to get a question answered -- don't hesitate, call or email me! My job is to help you be your best, and I can't do that if I don't know what you need.
My goals include that you learn:
- How and where to get help for personal and academic issues
- How to revise and correct your own work
- How to build realistic self-esteem
- How to feel empowered in society
